Lady Wasps take their share of the Region 14 girl’s tennis title
REGION CHAMPS • The girls’ tennis team recently competed at the Region 14 championship, and after some great performances, ended up co-region champs with Manti. Manti won the regular season by two points over Juab, but the Wasps evened it out when it counted. The Lady Wasps tennis team are co-ed champions in Region 14, sharing the title with regular season winner Manti.
The Templars were ahead of Juab by 2 points after the end of the regular season, but some strong performances at the region tournament held on October 4 gave the Wasps a share of the title.
In 1st singles, Jessie Bills got a first round win over North Sanpete, 6-4, 6-2. In her second round, she won a hard-fought match over Manti to get into the finals, scoring 6-3, 5-7, 7-6 (7-4). She finished off the day with a loss to American Heritage 6-7 (4-7) 4-6 and placing 2nd overall.
In 2nd singles, Keanna Williams won her first round against Delta, 6-4, 6-3. She won her semifinal match with Maeser Prep, 7-6 (7-5), 6-3. In the finals, she went on to beat Manti with a final score of 7-6 (7-5), 6-4 to become a region champion.
In 3rd singles, Olivia Foster took the first round over North Sanpete, 6-2, 6-0. In the semifinals she beat Maeser Prep 7-5, 6-2. In the final round, she cruised past Manti to become a region champ, 6-3, 6-4.
In 1st doubles, Jennifer Kool and Emmalee Willmore got the first round win over North Sanpete 6-2, 6-1. They then went to the semifinal round and won 6-2, 6-4 over Union. In the final round, they fought a hard battle with Manti and lost 4-6, 6-7 (4-7) to take 2nd overall.
In 2nd doubles, Katie Welburn and Maddi Webster started off strong against Delta with a 6-3, 6-4 win. Moving into the semifinal, they defeated Maeser Prep 7-6 (7-4), 6-0. They lost to Manti in the final round, 2-6, 4-6 and finished 2nd overall.
The team will now head off to the state tournament this weekend, October 11-12, at Liberty Park in Salt Lake City.
